Your AC is running. The room is still warm.
Two very different faults look identical from the doorway, and one of them is not the machine at all. One measurement separates them.
It is the middle of a Bahraini summer. The unit has been running since morning. The room is not getting there, and the electricity bill says the machine is trying very hard.
Before anyone is called, it is worth establishing which of two completely different problems you have — because they look identical from the doorway and they cost different amounts to fix.
Either the unit is not producing cold air, which is a fault in the machine. Or it is producing cold air and the room is still losing the race, which is not a fault in the machine at all. Chasing the second as though it were the first is how owners end up replacing a perfectly good air conditioner and getting the same complaint the following week.
Do this first
The five-minute test
You need a thermometer. A cooking thermometer is fine.
- 01Run the unit on full cooling for at least fifteen minutes.
- 02Measure the air going into the unit, at the return grille.
- 03Measure the air coming out, right at the outlet. Subtract.
- 04A healthy split system delivers supply air roughly 8 to 12°C colder than the air it takes in. On a humid day it sits at the lower end — the machine is spending part of its capacity pulling water out of the air — so read it as a range, not a pass mark.
- 05Under about 6°C: the machine is the problem. A normal difference with a room that still will not cool: the machine is fine and the building is the problem.
If it is the machine: the causes, cheapest first
The filter
In Bahrain a filter does not last the season. Dust loads are high enough that a filter left through the summer chokes airflow, and restricted airflow reduces cooling directly.
The outdoor coil
The condenser rejects the heat, and it can only do that if air moves freely across it. A coil packed with dust, a unit boxed into a service balcony with no clearance, or one in full afternoon sun with a wall a hand's width behind it, cannot dump heat.
A blocked condensate drain
The drain line clogs with dust and biological growth. Either water appears in the ceiling below — see our guide on ceiling stains — or the coil ices over and airflow stops completely.
Refrigerant
A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. If it is low, there is a leak. Topping it up without finding that leak buys you one season, and you buy it again every year until the compressor fails from running short of charge.
The compressor
The expensive end. At which point the honest conversation is about age and replacement, not repair.
If it is the building: what is actually happening
A unit selected for a 35°C day has no margin left on a 40°C one. It never reaches the set point, so it never switches off, so it runs at full duty for months.
The unit that cannot keep up in its third summer is often the unit that fails in its fourth.
The cost is not only the bill. A machine that never cycles wears at several times the rate of one that reaches temperature and rests. Fixes here are not HVAC work: shading the glass on the sun side, insulating a roof slab, sealing a door, or adding capacity where a room genuinely has more heat gain than the machine was ever sized for.
One thing owners get wrong
Setting the thermostat to 18°C does not cool the room faster. A thermostat is not a tap — the compressor is either on or off, and it produces cold at exactly one rate. All 18°C achieves is a target the unit cannot reach, so it never stops running. Set the temperature you actually want, and let it switch off.
What a real service includes
Useful when deciding whether the visit you paid for was one. Filters cleaned or replaced. Both coils cleaned, indoor and outdoor — a service that only touches the indoor unit has skipped the half that rejects the heat. Condensate line flushed and the fall on the drain checked. Electrical connections and contactors checked. Refrigerant charge measured, not guessed. The temperature split recorded, so next year's reading means something.
If what happened was a filter change and a spray of the indoor unit, that was a clean, not a service. The right month for it is spring, before the load arrives — not midsummer, when every contractor in Bahrain is already committed and the unit is being asked to perform at its limit for the first time in eight months. That timing is the entire argument for putting it on an annual maintenance contract rather than on a complaint.
